Academic Biography

Karen graduated from St. Olaf College with a B.A. in English. After completing the Radcliffe Publishing Course, she began her editorial career in educational publishing, which included curriculum for public television and online courses. After seven years in this field, she earned her M.A.T. in History at Tufts University and began teaching history and English. Across nine years of teaching and two years of tutoring in private schools, Karen has emphasized metacognitive strategies that give students confidence and the ability to master their work. She views reading, writing, and test preparation as a process of linking cause and effect, as well as of answering the "why" questions. With her students, she encourages discussion and learning through writing. For larger assignments, such as research papers and comprehensive exams, she promotes students' executive function skills by reinforcing connections between significant details and larger patterns.
