Academic Biography
Rebecca received her BA from Barnard College in History, her MA in Educational Psychology from NYU, and her EdD in Developmental Psychology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Rebecca has broad experience as an educator. She tutored small groups of adults in basic literacy and writing for two years with The New York Public Library's Center for Reading and Writing, and has volunteered as a literacy tutor in Boston-area elementary schools for several years. Rebecca has taught one-on-one conversational English and writing to Japanese scientists living in the United States, and also taught an introductory psychology course (in English) to Japanese summer school students at the Showa Institute. She taught English as a second language in three public high schools in rural Japan under the auspices of the Japan Exchange Teaching Program. Rebecca enjoys the cross-cultural exchange of ideas intrinsic to working with non-native speakers of English. On the university level, Rebecca teaches a course in developmental psychology as an adjunct professor at Northeastern University; she taught similar courses as a graduate teaching fellow at Harvard University. In addition to covering principles of psychology, her instruction emphasizes expressing ideas in writing with succinct clarity.
Personal Biography
Her strength as a teacher and as a tutor comes from an understanding that students have different personal reasons for studying a particular subject. Rebecca tailors the discussion and instruction to accommodate her students' dispositions toward the material. By encouraging students to articulate their learning goals, Rebecca helps them to manage their study time and their expectations, and to orient themselves to better engage with the material.
