Academic Biography

David graduated from Harvard College in Mathematics and took up the then-blossoming field of Computer Science. He got one of the first Ph.D.s in CS, from Cornell, with a minor in Mathematics, writing a thesis on the mathematical theory of computing and formal languages. He always loved teaching, so David pursued an academic career at Brown, Cornell and ultimately Ithaca College, an undergraduate teaching institution, where he became tenured Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science. Besides teaching Math and CS, David, designed and taught some of the first "computer literacy" and "computers and society" courses anywhere, helped establish degree programs in CS and Mathematical CS, conceived and taught National Science Foundation summer programs for high school students, and taught and tutored a wide range of students across the Math and CS curricula. Then one day David decided to disprove the old adage that "those who can, do; those who can't, teach" and began a successful career as an industrial computer scientist, software engineer and software development manager. He conceived, wrote and/or managed numerous products that can be found today in the catalogs of software companies large and small. And now he is back to his first loves, Mathematics and teaching, and has been tutoring for almost four years. As you may have guessed by now, David is not a typical Harvard undergrad or grad student tutor, but has had a full career, two in fact. He brings the fruits of all that experience to tutoring in Mathematics, including first-hand knowledge of what's important for real life as well as jumping through the necessary hoops. Speaking of hoops, David holds Massachusetts certification to teach high school and middle school Mathematics.
